Getting a Spark(s)

Shakespear had a way with words that was fed by the mind but spoken through the heart. His talent is hard to come by and few have mastered the art of story telling like Shakespear.

But like every rule, there is an exception. Author’s like J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer have produced the best fantasy novels I’ve read – but only 1 author for me can get a spark when it comes to telling real human tales.

Perhaps by now the title has given my favorite author away, but for those who haven’t read his work, he is Nicholas Sparks. You might remember him better if I mention the film adaptation of his novel The Notebook. But far from the Hollywood hype, his tales are those of great human sacrifice and getting back up when the fall seems to have been too high. Sparks is not perfect, there can be some exaggerations in his mode of story telling. But when you pick up his book and flip through the pages you forget where you are and you are absorbed into his world. Flaws are forgotten and the essence of the story is felt. For me, Nicholas Sparks has done what he has set out to do. To tell a tale and keep the reader enthralled.

Every author has his own technique, that special touch to make a story great. For those who love to write I suggest you visit this site:

Coughing Up A Hairball

Wonder what makes those high school memories stand out? It could be the carefree life you lived then, or the friends you laughed, cried, fought and literally grew with.

Whatever the reason may be high school was one time I won’t ever want to forget. Our senior year was the best – not only because graduation was just around the corner – but it was also a time where we all grew up and our friendships were solidified. From the crazy antics of using the 2nd floor window to get the the canteen to locking ourselves out of our room! The morning rituals of having a pack of biscuits tossed in your face (which I might add is a friendly gesture) while trying to figure out the answer to what would cause a high demand in the economy, or cramming to get all Force formulas in your sleep deprived brain.
It was also a time of learning to leave behind the kid and stepping into becoming a young adult. We had each other to lean  on, and we knew that if we were to stumble and fall, there was someone always willing to extend their helping hand. Mind you, it wasn’t always roses and daisies for us, we had rough times and these times tested the bond we had made and I’m happy to say, 10 years on that the bond is stronger that it ever was.

Looking back, I realized that having these group of friends was like a mini-society, preparing you for the real world. Though the real world is ten times tougher than the storms my friends and I have weathered, I knew I could make it, if I hanged-tough and kept my eye on the prize, I’d still be standing. Like my good friend said: “life isn’t easy dude, but you can sure laugh about it. Just think of it as coughing up a hairball.” And you know what? I couldn’t agree more.

monday blues

chase the monday blues away with these great tips!

1. Start your day with a hearty breakfast. Just sipping that mug of coffee isn’t enough. The food you eat gives you just the right energy to start the day – and the week right.

2. Pump up that iPod. Keeping the tunes coming relieves anxiety and helps you achieve that positive outlook you need to keep you on the right track.

3. Don’t sweat the small stuff.  We live in a fickle world and sometimes we can’t help it when stuff gets on your nerves…so whenever it does happen, take a deep breath, count to 10 and breath out…

4. Look forward to something. If you are dreading coming to work or sometimes just get the urge to play hookey, think of any event you are looking forward to…A movie by the weekend, or a party at your friends. Make it your own “light at the end of the tunnel” and you’ll never notice the week pass by.

5. And finally, pray. A little prayer before you start the day is the best way to feel positive. Whatever religion you may be…a little divine intervention goes a long way.

So folks, keep those blues away and look forward to a better day..:)

Have a good one! :)

Thesis Jitters

Its your senior year in college and graduating is just a few months away. You feel it in the air and you can see it in the faces of all your classmates. But wait, aren’t you forgetting something?! Ah yes…The good old thesis…you can’t graduate without it.

I remember my thesis and I gotta tell you I would’ve died if it hadn’t been for my out-dated but very reliable laptop and the internet. Beyond the endless experiments, surveys and constant research, technology was my saving grace. Sure the library is always the best source of all references but some international journals crucial to the study can only be accessed online. You do know that feeling right? You’re running around looking for that right reference, juggling a hardbound book just to get it to the copiers only to find in the end that what you’re looking for was in a journal and accessible with just 1 mouse click. Hassle right?

That’s where the beauty of electronic journals come in. In my day we used international sites and the drawback was we could never find any applications that would fit the country setting. Lucky for you guys these days, we have philippine journals that can be accessed online! It means that whatever study you may be doing, you can be assured that it is relatable to the Philippine setting and you have better ideas of its applicability and feasibility in the country.

Thesis just got easier, and before I forget, the website for the best philippine journal reference is www.ejournals.ph

Hope this helps you guys out!

Have a nice day people! ^^)v

The “E” in e-Learning

Many have come to appreciate the ease and comfort technology has given to everyday tasks. From letters, to conferences, technological advancements have indeed become an integral part of our lives.

The scope of technology has increased since it was first introduced. From business to leisure, technology has been applied, and these days it is also being incorporated in education. Far from the usual classroom setting, technology has opened many doors to make education more accessible and standardized to cope with globalization.

Dubbed e-Learning, this aims to provide standardized, quality education to all students. By presenting lessons in an attractive and engaging manner, students are expected to be more encouraged to study and learn more. Also, it promotes studying beyond the four walls of the classroom. It also helps in cultivating the individuality of a student and applying this individuality to solve a problem.

Many things are yet to be considered to have a flawless system to present lessons and integrate classroom and outside learning methods. This though, is a good start. To consider the possibilities and to polish procedures so that one day the next generation will be able to reap the rewards of our educators’ labors.

work from home

Our homes are the best place to be. It is our sanctuary, a place to relax and hide from the urban jungle. We can do anything we want at home. The question today is, are we ready to let work into our private space too?

In an article I read, it stated that in the near future, call center agents can work in the comfort of their own home. It seems like the greatest idea ever right? I know there are many professionals who can and often opt to work from home these days. And they love they it!  Just think about it, not having to dress up at an early hour and being able to enjoy the sunlight creep into the windows of your work space at home while sipping homebrewed coffee….ah….that will be the day!

On a serious note, there are always pros and cons, whatever the topic is. And the pros of working from home are enticing. You have the ability to manage your time and still get things done at home. With everything connected through the internet, submission of projects and communicating with your colleagues is a breeze! The hassle of mnorning traffic will be but a memory and getting home before dinner will be a thing of the past.

But there is something that bothers me about all this. Sure the ease and comfort of working from home is a novelty – but what about the loss of personal interaction? Is it really healthy to leave interaction to video conferencing, chat and email? Will we still be as satisfied with our work even though the only real reaction we can get are pixelized images of the person we are interacting with?

Whoever said moderation is the key is a genius. For all the advancements in technology – lets keep personal interactions a part of lives – for this is the essence of being uniquely human. :)

10 tips to dodge writer’s block

Do you ever find yourself staring at your keyboard and wondering where all the words in the world seemed to go? You my friend are experiencing writer’s block. You may be writing for fun or a professional – writer’s block spares no one.

I searched the web and have added a few tips myself to come up with the 10 things you could do when things just seem to fade to black.

1. Keep an outline of the topic you are writing about. Whether writing a poem or a technical article, keep ideas for every stanza or paragraph handy. That way even when at a a loss for words, you never loose the idea when you want to get to.

2. Distractions must be kept at bay. Text messages. tweeting and even chatting with a friend on the phone should be avoided. Keep your productive hours in mind and stick to it, that way you lessen the chance of frustation over not getting the words on print.

3. Give yourself a break. Sitting for long hours in front of your PC won’t do any good. When the creative juices are flowing, keep writing, but as soon as you hit a snag, just keep calm and walk away. Scoot on over to the ref or your scenic back yard to recharge.

4. Editing can wait. When that cursor blinks and blinks, it can spark a view vains to pop. Just type whatever comes to mind, Cleaning up your work can wait at the end and you get the best results when you just let it flow.

5. Your iPod is your best friend. Most people these days have an iPod or a music player. Keep the inspiration within reach by playing music – soothing music can keep you inspired and give you more ideas to work with than just having silence as your company.

6. Keep a pen and paper handy. You never know whenan idea will strike you. And when it does, you wanna be able to write it down. It doesn’t matter if it has nothing to do with what you are currently writing, just keep it handy – trust me you’ll thank yourself for writing it down. :)

7. Travel. Well not in the literal sense. :) Keeping yourself locked up in your room isn’t the only way to keep writer’s block at bay. Try writing in new places. Immersing yourself in a different environment stimulates the brain and can help you get new ideas to add that spice in your writing!

 8. Keep it real. Exaggerations often help get a point or an emotion across. But keep in mind that keeping it simple always does the job better. Imagine certain ideas as if you were really interacting with someone close to you, and their reponses. Nicholas Sparks is a great example. He knows when he needs to push it and when to make his characters as simple as the person sitting next to you.

9. Don’t second guess yourself. Whatever you have first written is usually the best. It varies from case to case, but when you look back at previous manuscripts or compositions, the first one always sounds much better.

10. Keep calm and cool. Just think of writer’s block as your brain’s way of saying: “I need rest.” Those ideas will come running back so long as you keep these tips in mind. And never loose the drive to write what’s in your heart, coz that’s what counts the most!

Hope this helps all the writer’s out there.

Have a good one y’all! :)

the road to nowhere

from the sweetest kiss
to the hearbreaking hug
from all the words of love
to words that can’t be undone

all life has been for this love,
and yet all seems for not when i look what we have.
and when the darkness falls
and all but hide from the lightless space,
wishing, hoping, dreading your touch will torment me more.

when all was young and true,
and everything was all but clear,
visions of life with you were sky blue,
and forever was a word -  finally believe to be true.

happiness became a luxury,
a love once cherished now a mystery.
and like the sands of time that flow through the glass,
so does this love seem to come at a pass.

days, months…all could not be controlled.
time passed and so did forever.
when it seems like the story told,
would not end in happily ever after.

The Army Way

It isn’t everyday that you meet a person you connect with so easily. It isn’t everyday that you find happiness in the prescence of someone you barely know. In the end, you never want to let go. But fate always throws a curve ball, some stay safe…but most strike out.

For once, I am at a loss for words. There are a thousand emotions that plague my mind and rattle my usually calm soul. See, there is a time that I wish to forget, yet I know that is impossible. For it was not only one of the worst times of my life…it was also one of the best.

I was never a fan of ROTC back in school. I detested ever moment I had to stay under the sun and wait for shouted orders. I saw the boys dedicated to this class, the officers who stood with pride in their spotless uniforms and shiny rifles, but I never understood where that pride came from, or the easy confidence that radiated from their faces. It wasn’t till a Sunday evening that I finally understood why I was having these thoughts.

The answer came in the form of a Staff Sergeant – though I was oblivious to that fact at first. A very unlikely meeting for two very unlikely people. One was sociable, the other a loner.  One was disciplined, the other still too carefree to notice. Unlikely as could be, each found in other, something neither could deny. It was crazy, improprobable, but it felt so right. Days passed and I found his world fascinating, to be truthful, I found him fascinating. The dedication to the job, the discipline. Oh, don’t get me wrong, he had his flaws – he made mistakes, but all the same, there was something that made him  – to me – a gentleman. As I later learned, he was in the Army Reserves and at that time the war in Iraq was in full swing. We both knew his deployment orders would come, but we never expected it when he got it.

As much as I would like to say that I was the calm girl, who put on a strong face and a smile to see him off, I can’t. It was this time that I truly understood the bravery of a soldier. Not the bravery on the front lines, but bravery in walking away from their civilian lives. Having to leave family and friends and yet still be able to function on the battlefield. That is what I believe to this day. That everything I saw that day on the field, the pride the confidence – isn’t born from standing in the sun or talking gruff orders – it’s born of the sacrifices they make along the way and the people who never cease to support them.

As for my story – the words above may not sound coherent anymore. I don’t intend to finish it too. Rather I leave it up to you…something to think about…..

jenson button f1 champ

“we are the champions my friends…” I will never forget that being sung in an almost too-gruff-with-emotion voice by Jenson Button, the 2009 f1 driver’s champion.

I have been an f1 fan since 2004, not very long, but Jenson has been the driver I’ve always rooted for. I’ve watched him grow, learn not to push the car and finally find his comfort zone, enough to get him the title.

It was a fairy tale ending for Brawn GP – Jenson’s team – since it was their first formula season. The Honda Team pulled out and no one at Honda knew if they would even race in 2009. But 3 weeks before the season started – the car was found eligible to race and as they say, the rest is history. And what a history they made! From the start – podium after podium – Button and Barrichello left the rest of the grid gaping. After 16 races, Button nabs the top spot and Barrichello th 3rd. A great year for Brawn and yet a greater year for Jenson.

So Jenson – hats off to you mate! You have shown that experience, patience and taking it slow – even in the fast-paced world of f1 – gets you the gold. Enjoy the win and best of luck next season! :)
