Do you ever find yourself staring at your keyboard and wondering where all the words in the world seemed to go? You my friend are experiencing writer’s block. You may be writing for fun or a professional – writer’s block spares no one.
I searched the web and have added a few tips myself to come up with the 10 things you could do when things just seem to fade to black.
1. Keep an outline of the topic you are writing about. Whether writing a poem or a technical article, keep ideas for every stanza or paragraph handy. That way even when at a a loss for words, you never loose the idea when you want to get to.
2. Distractions must be kept at bay. Text messages. tweeting and even chatting with a friend on the phone should be avoided. Keep your productive hours in mind and stick to it, that way you lessen the chance of frustation over not getting the words on print.
3. Give yourself a break. Sitting for long hours in front of your PC won’t do any good. When the creative juices are flowing, keep writing, but as soon as you hit a snag, just keep calm and walk away. Scoot on over to the ref or your scenic back yard to recharge.
4. Editing can wait. When that cursor blinks and blinks, it can spark a view vains to pop. Just type whatever comes to mind, Cleaning up your work can wait at the end and you get the best results when you just let it flow.
5. Your iPod is your best friend. Most people these days have an iPod or a music player. Keep the inspiration within reach by playing music – soothing music can keep you inspired and give you more ideas to work with than just having silence as your company.
6. Keep a pen and paper handy. You never know whenan idea will strike you. And when it does, you wanna be able to write it down. It doesn’t matter if it has nothing to do with what you are currently writing, just keep it handy – trust me you’ll thank yourself for writing it down.
7. Travel. Well not in the literal sense.
Keeping yourself locked up in your room isn’t the only way to keep writer’s block at bay. Try writing in new places. Immersing yourself in a different environment stimulates the brain and can help you get new ideas to add that spice in your writing!
8. Keep it real. Exaggerations often help get a point or an emotion across. But keep in mind that keeping it simple always does the job better. Imagine certain ideas as if you were really interacting with someone close to you, and their reponses. Nicholas Sparks is a great example. He knows when he needs to push it and when to make his characters as simple as the person sitting next to you.
9. Don’t second guess yourself. Whatever you have first written is usually the best. It varies from case to case, but when you look back at previous manuscripts or compositions, the first one always sounds much better.
10. Keep calm and cool. Just think of writer’s block as your brain’s way of saying: “I need rest.” Those ideas will come running back so long as you keep these tips in mind. And never loose the drive to write what’s in your heart, coz that’s what counts the most!
Hope this helps all the writer’s out there.
Have a good one y’all!
